Aloe Vera Water: What Is It and Why Should I Drink It?

Aloe Vera Water: What Is It and Why Should I Drink It?

Many home cooks keep an aloe plant in the kitchen to soothe emergency burns and minor skin abrasions, but did you know you can drink it, too?

Yes, You Can Drink Aloe Vera Juice!

I’ve long kept a bottle of aloe vera juice in my refrigerator as a go-to natural remedy for the occasional upset stomach. A friend from the Caribbean uses it as a pick-me-up whenever she feels sluggish. Some folks knock a bit back if they’ve imbibed too much the night before.

A Short History of Aloe Vera Juice

It makes sense. Aloe is one of the oldest plants in the world favored by traditional cultures, historically employed to soothe all kinds of things that ail you—whether that’s digestive issues, fevers, or, more esoterically, smearing it on your body to combat perspiration like hunters in the Congo do.
The plant is native to sub-Saharan Africa but its easy cultivation means it’s now fairly widespread—and likely on your counter.

What's in Aloe Vera Juice?

Lily of the Desert offers a widely available juice and gel and claims it contains 200 biologically active components such as vitamins A, C and E, minerals and amino acids.
You may see language like "whole leaf" or "inner fillet." The former means the whole leaf has been processed, including the yellowy sap layer between the outer rind and the inner fillet; the latter means it’s comprised of just the gel inside the leaves.

Is Aloe Juice the Next Coconut Water?

Following in coconut water’s boom, a number of manufacturers have developed aloe-based waters. The juice and gel are colorless and their slightly bitter citrus notes work well with other like-minded, nutritionally trendy ingredients such as honey, wheatgrass, goji berries and pomegranate. In my Wegmans, they fly off their ransacked shelves faster than I can try them all.

What to Look for in Aloe Waters

Aloe waters feel especially refreshing after a challenging yoga class or on a hot day. If you have texture issues, the waters with jellylike aloe flotsam might not be for you, but I like them because I know there’s real aloe in there.
Some are made with just aloe vera juice, which is clear. Ingredients and their amounts really vary; many rely on combos of juice and/or natural sweeteners (honey, organic cane sugar and stevia) to round out the bitterness.
You may also find single-serving powdered mix-in packets. I prefer the ones with a coconut water base (like Alodrink’s Coco Exposed) because they typically have no added sugar and feel a tropical holiday.

How I Use Aloe Vera Juice

As summer winds down, I’ve taken to some DIY agua frescas with the juice or the gel and permutations of watermelon, cucumber and lime. It’s also a stealthy add-in to lemonade.
One note of caution: I’ve spied recipes advising you to just scrape out the inner leaf and do the same. However, some aloes are poisonous. A nonprofit called theInternational Aloe Science Council exists (offering certification testing of raw materials and finished products). So, I’d rather trust my gut—and whatever else aloe may benefit—to juices, gels and waters from companies who’ve already processed it for human consumption.

Your ready Aloe Vera Gel
Your ready Aloe Vera Gel

Preparation Time

Prep time: 10 min
Ready in: 10 min
Yields: Lasts for about 2 weeks

What you will need

  • 1-3 Aloe Vera leaves, fresh
  • 1 Vitamin E, capsule
  • 1 Vitamin C, pill
  • 1 Tbsp Rosewater, bottled
  • Kitchenblender

Slice from the side and pull openInstructions

Aloe Vera Gel is one of the easiest natural cosmetics to be made at home and is known for its properties to cool the skin and help against acne, minor burns and itchy rashes. While ready-made products only contain small amounts of actual Aloe Vera and instead a lump sum of unwanted, often skin irritating chemicals, you can be sure to use a perfectly organic and hundred percent natural product, if you make your own Aloe Vera Gel at home.
Take about 2-3 leaves of a fresh Aloe Vera plant. If you don’t have a plant at home, you can nowadays get the leaves cut and packed in many supermarkets or organic stores. I personally highly recommend to grow Aloe Vera at home. It is an extreme resistant and easy to grow plant that only requires a warm, half-sunny place and watering every few days. Only like this you can be sure to be using a pesticide free product - and after all that is what we want for our sensitive skin!
1. Cut the leaf with a sharp knife close to the stem. The yellow liquid that comes out of the cut tissue can be skin irritating, so make sure you wash your Aloe Vera leaves well before further processing.

2. Cut along the flat side of the leaf and carefully lift it up like a lid. You then can easily scratch out the content of the leaf with a teaspoon directly into your blender. Just make sure you have washed your hands well before dealing with the Aloe Vera Gel so that it will stay fresh longer. If small pieces of leaf tissue (green chunks in your otherwise clear gel) have fallen into the blender, just remove them with a clean spoon before adding the other ingredients.
Make sure the unprocessed Aloe Vera Gel is clear and not discoloured, otherwise dispose it and try a fresh leaf.

3. You then add the content of 1 Vitamin E capsule into the blender which will enhance the positive effects of the Aloe Gel on your skin. Crush 1 Vitamin C pill and add it – this will help to preserve your gel longer. The Vitamins we have used in this recipe were bought at a regular pharmacy and contain 400mg of Vitamin E and 500mg of Vitamin C.
Vitamin E will be liquid inside the capsule, while the Vitamin C needs to be crushed

Add a few drops of rosewater before the blending

4. We now usually add about 1 tbsp Rosewater – you can vary according to the desired intensity of the scent. If you can’t find Rosewater in your normal supermarket, try a local Asian, Iranian or Indian shop – you should be able to easily find it. The Rosewater is simply serving the purpose of enhancing the scent, as the pure gel can have a grassy and slightly unpleasant smell. Feel free to try other scents and share your results with the community!
5. Now blend the mix for only a few seconds, to avoid making it to watery. As you can see we have made only a very small quantity, as we prefer to make our Gel fresh every other week. But you can of course make a bit larger quantities, too, just add respectively more Vitamin C, E and Rosewater.

Our home-made pure Aloe Vera Gel is now ready and can be filled into any clean airtight container, preferably glas.
You can now keep your Aloe Vera Gel for about 2 months in the fridge.
Aloe Vera Gel is known for its excellent ability to penetrate the human skin and thus rehydrate it. It further more has positive effects on acne, can be used to treat sunburnand is even said to regenerate hair follicles. While we haven't tried all of its properties ourselves, we can certainly say that it has a great effect on our skin, makes us look and feel rejuvenated and has helped me against itchy rashes and even mosquito bites. It several time has helped me to get rid of annoying sleep lines in a matter of minutes. Especially in hot summers the cold gel out of the fridge is like putting a relaxing facemask on!
The main advantage of making the Aloe Vera Gel at home, is that you can be absolutely sure what is in it. Many ready-made product have only a minuscule amount of pure Aloe in it and will most likely not do you much good.
So spread the word, enjoy your home-made Aloe Vera Gel and share your experiences with us!

7 Amazing Uses for Aloe Vera

An aloe vera plant can add a lovely touch of green to any office or home. But did you know that your favorite potted plant could be used for so much more than household décor?
The powerful aloe vera plant is a part of the Aloaceae, or lily, family, which is known for its diverse perennials with short stems and thick, crowded leaves.
Aloe vera has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands, today aloe vera is grown in tropical climates worldwide. From relieving heartburn to slowing the spread of cancer, researchers are only first beginning to unlock all of the powerful uses of this universal plant and its many amazing byproducts.
1. Your houseplant could fight your heartburn. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that often results in symptoms including heartburn. A recent review explains that consuming 1 to 3 onces of aloe gel at mealtimes could reduce the severity of GERD and other digestion-related problems. The plant’s low toxicity makes it a safe and gentle remedy.
2. A little aloe vera gel a day could keep bacteria on fruits and vegetables away. In a recent study, an aloe vera gel coating on tomato plants was able to block, not all, but many types of harmful bacteria. Similar results were found in a different study with apples. This means that aloe gel could help produce stay fresh for longer without the need for potentially dangerous chemicals.
3. An alternative to mouthwash. A 2014 study found aloe vera extract to be a safe and effective alternative to chemical-based mouthwashes. The plant’s natural ingredients, which include a healthy dose of vitamin C, can block plaque and also provide relief if you have bleeding or swelling gums.
4. The new blood sugar regulator is greener than ever. Might aloe vera be able to help people with diabetes regulate their blood sugar levels? One study conducted in Thailand found that two tablespoons of aloe vera juice per day caused blood sugar levels to fall in people with type 2 diabetes, which means it may have a future in diabetes treatment. These results were confirmed with a later study from Turkey that used pulp extract.
5. A little extra push. Recently, a team of Nigerian scientists conducted a study to determine whether local folklore about aloe vera was true. Experimenting on rats, they found that gel made from typical aloe vera houseplants was able to relieve constipation.
6. Brighten more than just your office space. You can use aloe vera to keep your skin clear and hydrated. According to a study, the plant is particularly special because it’s designed to live in dry, unstable climates. To survive, the leaves of aloe vera store water. The combination of the moist leaf and special plant compounds called complex carbohydrates make it an effective face moisturizer and pain reliever.
7. Stepping up in the battle against cancer. According to a new study, aloe-emodin, a compound in aloe vera leaves, could slow down the spread of breast cancer cells. Researchers are currently investigating how aloe may play a role in other types of cancer, as well.

The Takeaway

There are hundreds of ways to use the aloe vera plant and the various gels and extracts that can be made from it. Researchers are continuing to discover new ways to put this natural superpower to use. The next time you are looking for an effective remedy or just a new houseplant, consider aloe vera.

Aloe Vera gel

arm1Aloe Vera gel is a most ingenious mixture of an antibiotic, an astringent coagulating agent, a pain inhibitor and a growth stimulator (also called a “wound hormone”), whose function is to accelerate the healing of injured surfaces.
It is used for pain relief and healing of ‘hemorrhoids, applied externally and internally. Aloe-based pharmaceutical products are being used to control female yeast infections.
Physicians have greatly reduced external scarring with the use of Aloe Vera. It is effective, also, for sunburn, scratches, cuts and a cleansing purge for the body or skin. It is an aid to growing new tissue and alleviating the advance of skin cancer caused by the sun. It is a treatment for ringworm, boils, inflamed joints, scalds, itchy allergic conditions, insect stings and bites. It creates a definite softening of external skin, relief from dry or sensitive skin and skin diseases. Dentists and oral surgeons employ Aloe Vera Gelly for surgery, swift healing, relief of pain and other oral treatment, including mouth ulcers, fever blisters, cold sores and cankers.
mouthThe Aloe is believed to improve digestion and assimilation of food eaten, so that elimination is naturally normalized. This concept is in accordance with the Chinese or Asian philosophy of medicine, and goes back more than 5,000 years in their recorded history.
We now know, through research, that the gel from the Aloe Vera leaf is capable of penetrating to the water-retaining second layer of skin, helping to slough off the dead cells gathered there (causing beauty marring); also in dissolving the roots of infection. Possibly, aloe vera’s mysterious properties may come from what many consider to be its biggest secret and most magical medical mystery: the ENZYMES ACTION working speedily within the gel seems to foster the growth of healthy new tissue. It is reported by many to have this amazing ability to penetrate, giving quick relief from pain, both topically and below the skin. People testify to its internal, magical properties, too, in the reduction of arthritis, ulcers, indigestion, constipation and many other uncomfortable conditions.
cleoFrom the dim history of the Greeks and Egyptians and other civilizations through the ages, gel has been used in cosmetics. Today, you will find many aloe-based cosmetics and skin care items on the market. Hundreds of people have reported that the enzyme activity actually reduces and eliminates scars, liver spots, age lines, marks and blotches, etc. The ability of new cell growth should eventually produce younger skin for women of any age. Many cosmetics have promised this in the past with other natural products, but never has one had the background of historical proof and testimonials that the Aloe Vera true and natural plant now does!!!
The manner in which the Aloe Vera plant heals itself is really wonderful to observe. The leaves have no stalks or woody parts and are kept upright by the water pressure of the gel. A leaf, slashed across with a sharp knife, first spurts out its life-blood as the turgid flesh is opened. A few seconds later the wound films over. The next few minutes a rubber-like, protective coating effectively seals off loss of water. In a short time, the wound heals completely. The plant contains a wound healing substance which accomplishes this.
arm2Aloe Vera gel is an extraordinary demulcent compound, composed of mannuronic and glucuronic units combined to form a polymer of high molecular weight. Gastric mucin contains only glucuronic units in its carbohydrate moiety. The uronic acids are natural detoxicants, and as they are released by the hydrolytic cleavage of Aloe Vera gel, they may take part in the healing process by stripping toxic materials of their harmful irritation. The gel is tenacious to a marked degree, in which property it excels over all other known gums, including methylcellulose. Unlike Methylcellulose, which is biochemically inert, Aloe Vera gel is certainly reactive. It serves as a biochemical “bandage” and is protectively helpful in restraining aggravating irritants from reaching the sensitive ulcer.
microscopeThe gel coacervates (a chemical action resulting in physical change) pepsin in the same fashion that quince seed gel coacervates pepsin. Coacervated pepsin is reversible and can release its enzyme at the proper electrical charge. In coacervated form, pepsin loses its proteolvtic effectiveness but regains it when released. Food reverses the coacervation so that after the administration of the gel, the pepsin remains inert so long as the stomach is devoid of food, but on introducing food (particularly protein) the coacervate reverses and the pepsin is set free to digest the nutrients. The gel inhibits the secretion of hydrochloric acid by the parietal cells of the stomach. The acid develops at the membrane surface through the interaction of sodium chloride and carbonic acid. This reaction is halted by Aloe Vera gel. It thus acts as an antihistamine. The Aloe Vera gel also acts as a mild laxative, and since most peptic ulcer patients are also constipated, it helps this condition as well. Tests conducted on ulcer patients in Florida in 1962, as reported in the Journal A.O.A., Vol. 62, April 1963, showed that the clinical administration of Aloe Vera gel emulsion resulted in permanent relief for 94% of ulcer patients who had had the condition for an extended period of time.leg
The clinical use of Aloe Vera gel for ulcer treatment is relatively new. The properties which make it valuable for this purpose, however, also make it a miraculous treatment for burns. Medical research on this phase of Aloe Vera was done in the early 1930’s when the crude X-ray techniques of that time often resulted in painful and disfiguring keloids and burns. The fresh gel was used to promote healing of the injured tissue. As X-ray techniques improved, and other methods for curing diseases previously treated by X-ray (antibiotics, fungicides, etc.) were developed, interest in Aloe Vera again declined because no good method had been worked out for preserving and storing the essential curative elements for general use. Recent research, however, has revealed that Aloe Vera gel can be concentrated andabilized in a powerful form. Many commercial preparations containing it are now he market, in the form of ointments and creams for topical surface applications, and in a variety of surfactants for internal use.

About aloe vera:
Aloe vera is considered by many to be a member of the cactus family. In reality, it is a member of the lily family. There are over 200 species of the aloe plant, but only one true Aloe Vera. Only the authentic Aloe Vera provides the potent therapeutic effects which nature has built in it.
It is only recently that Aloe Vera has been “re-discovered” and has come back into general use. Ironically enough, it was the invention of the X-ray and the atom bomb which again focused attention upon the plant. It was found early in the search for protection against radiation burns that the best treatment was Aloe Vera gel. As chemical, medical and physical scientific research as progressed, many old remedies have been found to be worthless because they were based upon faulty information and reasoning. Some, however, have been discovered to be infinitely superior to many synthetics.farmer
There are several variations of the aloe plant, but only one variety has a legendary medicinal reputation dating back thousands of years: the Aloe Vera. Vera, which means true in Latin, was added to the appellation of this particular specimen in order to distinguish its primacy among the aloe plants.
Aloe Vera is one of the old natural remedies that have come into their own in the Space Age as one of the modern “miracle” drugs.
